Cheese, Egg, and Cream Based Recipes - Gloucester Macaroni

Ingredients

  • 225 g/8 oz/2 cups short-cut macaroni

  • 450ml/2 cups milk

  • 25 g/1 oz/1/4 cup plain (all-purpose) flour

  • 50 g/2 oz/1/4 cup butter

  • 175 g/6 oz double Gloucester cheese, grated

  • 400 g/14 oz/1 large can chopped tomatoes, drained

  • 100 g/4 oz/1 cup cooked ham, diced

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 45 ml/3 tbsp crushed cornflakes


Method:

  1. Cook the macaroni according to the packet directions. Drain.

  2. Meanwhile, blend a little of the milk in a saucepan with the flour. Add the remaining milk and half the butter.

  3. Bring to the boil and cook for 2 minutes, stirring all the time. Stir in 100 g/1 cup of the cheese, the tomatoes, ham and a little salt and pepper.

  4. Turn into a shallow ovenproof dish. Mix the remaining cheese with the cornflakes and sprinkle over.

  5. Dot with the remaining butler and bake in the oven at 200°C/400°F/gas mark 6 for about 20 minutes or until bubbling and golden brown.
