Meats Recipes - Spaghetti with Spicy Meatballs

Ingredients                                        

  • 450 g/1lb/4 cups minced (ground) lamb or beef

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 garlic clove, crushed

  • 50 g/2 oz/1 cup fresh breadcrumbs

  • 1.5 ml/1/4 tsp chili powder (or more to taste)

  • 1.5 ml/1/4 tsp ground coriander (cilantro)

  • 1.5 ml/1/4 tsp ground cumin

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 size 4 egg, beaten

  • Oil for shallow-frying

  • 500 ml/1 jar passata (sieved tomatoes)

  • 5 ml/1 tsp dried oregano

  • 350 g/12 oz spaghetti

  • Grated Parmesan cheese


Method:

  1. Mix the meat, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, spices and a little salt and pepper thoroughly in a bowl.

  2. Add the egg and mix well to bind. Shape into small balls. Fry (sauté) in hot oil for about 3 minutes until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper.

  3. Pour the passata into a saucepan. Add the oregano and meatballs. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring gently occasionally.

  4. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti according to the packet directions. Drain and pile on to warm serving plates.

  5. Spoon the meatballs and sauce over and serve with the Parmesan cheese.
